Yes, you are absolutely right it is confusing! That's why there are Nutritionists and Dietitians to help you out. I am a Nutritionist and I specialize in weight loss and prevention of cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease. You need help from a Clinical Dietitian, someone who specializes in diet therapy. I found an article on the UCSF Medical Center website that might help you out:

Diverticular Disease and Diet http://www.ucsfhealth.org/education/diverticular_disease_and_diet/

It is my understanding that a person with diverticulosis can eat nuts and seeds as tolerated except when the colon becomes infected or inflammed (diverticulitis as opposed to diverticulosis). You know best how you feel so by all means avoid nuts and seeds if eating even a small amount causes you any problems.

Nuts and seeds are a good source of protein and certain vitamins and minerals such as magnesium. However, you can have a balanced and healthy diet without nuts and seeds. Just see to it that you have an all around balanced diet otherwise. Eat enough protein from other sources such as lean meat or poultry, fish, low fat dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soy milk), eggs, and beans (such as black beans or kidney beans). Enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables to get lots of vitamins and minerals. Nuts and seeds are also a good source of dietary fiber. You can get plenty of fiber from eating whole grains and a variety of fruits and vegetables.

If you get a chance to talk with a Clinical Dietitian that would be great. You might look to see if there is a book available on Amazon.com or elsewhere written by a dietitian that gives you sample diets specifically designed for people who struggle with diverticulosis.

Hope this helps,

A lot of diets recomend eating nuts and seeds, but I have diverticulosis and cannot consume any nuts or seeds. What could I replace them with? The doctor has put me on a 1500 calorie diet, but does not help me with any menus. It is all too confusing to me!

Jill,

Enriched soy milk and soy milk yogurts are nutritionally comparable with cow's milk products. Soy milk may be enriched with vitamins A, B12, D, and E and the mineral calcium. The protein content is similar. Unlike cow's milk, some soy milk products have added iron.

The calorie content of these products will vary depending on whether you are choosing full fat, reduced fat, or nonfat versions.

To find the soy milk products that will best meet your needs, check the nutrition facts label when available.

Hope this helps!
