It would be nice if the definition were indeed that simple. The problem comes in differences in interpretation across societies, cultures, and individuals. Whether we like it or not each person ultimately needs to decide for themselves what is acceptable in their own diet regardless of the label assigned.

I like your definition and it is the one I go by also. It would be helpful if everyone felt the same. However, commercially speaking, gelatin is made from by-products of the meat and leather industry. If that bothers someone who is avoiding meat then by all means I can be respectful of that.

Uhm, the menu is vegetarian...not vegan. Vegetarian- no meat. Vegan- no meat or animal products whatsoever. Get it?

I've now had a chance to check the ingredient list on the frosted shredded wheat that I have from time to time. It is made by Post. As it turns out neither the Lightly Frosted Shredded Wheat nor the Original Shredded Wheat by Post has gelatin. (The original shredded wheat, however, would save about 10 calories over the lightly frosted.)

I will be leaving this menu as is. I would like to share some 100% vegetarian (vegan) 1200 calorie menus in the near future (no eggs or milk products included as might be included in a lacto-ovo vegetarian plan).

What frosted shredded wheat were you looking at?

Thanks,

Lori

I am sorry but on this point I would have to disagree. If you read the article carefully, I point out that this is a sample menu for a lacto-ovo vegetarian. Eggs are included (ovo).

Thanks.

(I've now bolded that line to be more obvious.)
